How to Choose a Smartwatch: GPS, AMOLED, Battery and Water Resistance
Compartir
Smartwatches range from simple fitness bands to rugged outdoor GPS watches. These are the features that matter most when you compare them.
Screen: AMOLED or LCD
AMOLED screens show deeper blacks and brighter colours, which makes the watch easier to read outdoors. LCD screens are common on cheaper models.
GPS and sports modes
If you run, cycle or hike, choose a watch with built-in GPS so you can track your route without carrying your phone. Check how many sport modes the watch supports.
Bluetooth calls
Many watches let you answer calls from your wrist through Bluetooth. You still need your phone nearby.
Battery life
Larger batteries last longer, especially on rugged watches. Heavy use of GPS, the always-on display and calls shortens battery life.
Water resistance
IP68 or IP69K ratings protect against dust and water. ATM ratings such as 5 ATM or 10 ATM describe resistance to pressure in water. Check the product page for the exact rating.
Health tracking
Heart rate, sleep and blood oxygen readings are useful for daily wellness, but they are not medical devices and do not replace advice from a doctor.
